STEP UP YOUR DRIVE
Find your carpool commute options at www.SharetheRideIdaho.com and while you’re there, join the Winter Warrior commute challenge! From February 1- 28, log winter commutes to be entered to win BIG.
TAKE ADVANTAGE
Carpool with a vehicle that is better equipped for winter weather with AWD or snow tires, so you ride together and pitch in for gas (or vice versa – offer to drive someone without a winter-ready vehicle)
Safety – good to have a second person with you in case of car trouble or an accident in the cold weather.
CHECK YOUR VEHICLE
Be sure to check your vehicle’s anti-freeze level, fill up with winter wiper fluid for freezing temps, check your headlights and taillights, and stow a winter emergency pack in the trunk, just in case.
DEFROST COMPLETELY
Before you back out of the driveway, allow time for your vehicle to warm up and ensure all of the windows are completely defrosted, snow is cleared off the roof and hood, and windows are scraped free of any ice.
DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY
Slow down and maintain extra distance between vehicles while driving. Always accelerate and decelerate slowly in wet, icy, and snowy conditions to avoid sliding.
WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS + CYCLISTS
A driver traveling at 60 mph needs over 260 feet to stop. When commuting in the dark, pay extra attention to bike lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, school zones, and traffic lanes where bicyclists, pedestrians, and people waiting for the bus may be standing or traveling.
